NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2009 Nevada Landscape Architecture Awards

Dan Kovach, CFA's Senior Landscape Architect, received Merit Awards for two Reno projects from the Nevada Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) on December 5th 2009 at a reception in Las Vegas. The judging for the awards was done by the Louisiana Chapter of the ASLA.

The first project, the Neil-Kietzke Roundabout, was constructed by the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) to increase capacity of this very busy intersection and to provide beautification of the larger neighborhood. CFA created a more pleasurable driving experience utilizing earth mounds, plants with a year-round interest and low-water usage requirements, decomposed granite, rock, and boulders. The landscape provides a setting for three mule deer sculptures from local artist, Michael Boyce.

The roundabout was the first in the area for the RTC and it created a prototype for future intersections within the Truckee Meadows. The project was multi-jurisdictional, involving the RTC, the City of Reno, the Neighborhood Advisory Board, and the Nevada Department of Transportation. Adjacent private property owners were also involved since existing private landscape was modified to fit new roundabout improvements.

The second award-winning project was Fianna's Healing Garden at Renown Regional Medical Center. Originally, the location of a proposed building, the space between the Tahoe Tower and the Center for Advanced Medicine was re-designed as a healing garden at the conclusion of the major expansion at the medical center. While included in previous planning for the medical center campus, the scope of the design was expanded beyond a simple plaza to provide an escape from the stress of medical practice and to assist the healing process through a variety of sensory experiences including sight, sound, and smell. The landscape design provides a setting for three major public art pieces by San Francisco artist, Cork Marcheschi.

Water features include bio-filtration, which places a combination of plant material and growing media within the water to maintain clarity. The site of the garden is located near the center of the campus and is challenged with access limitations and extensive underground utilities. Design of the garden balances major circulation on the campus to the Tahoe Tower and public access between the Truckee River and a city park while maintaining secluded seating areas. The planting design allows views into the space from the adjacent two-story window wall of the Tahoe Tower lobby while incorporating selected trees to provide shade.

"Congratulations to Dan on receiving the merit award for Fianna's Healing Garden," said Rebecca Dickson, Fianna's eldest daughter and steering committee chair. "My mother enjoyed working with CFA and appreciated their talent and understanding of public spaces. Their design beautifully connects the Tahoe tower and Center for Advanced Medicine. The garden and its incredible sculptures are everything she could have imagined and much more thanks to their excellent work!"
